Forensics

Barrister has a partnership with one of the most experienced forensic teams in the DC metropolitan area.

The Computer Forensics & Intrusion Analysis (CFIA) Group is a functional ManTech SMA group that specializes in Computer Network Operations (CNO), Computer Forensics, and defensive cyber-solutions needed to meet increasingly complex technical challenges in the national security and commercial arenas.  CFIA supports more than 20 mission partners in the National Security and Intelligence Community as well as AmLaw 100 clients, federal and state agencies, and Fortune 500 corporations.  The team includes more than 130 seasoned TS/SCI cleared cyber-technologists and operators.  They have been involved in some of our nation’s most critical national security related computer engagements and have successfully handled hundreds of computer investigations and cyber-security assessments. In addition, they are often called upon to provide expert Litigation Support services for clients in both the private and government sectors.

CFIA uses secure state-of-the-art computer laboratories in a corporate facility and also provides direct operational support to several U.S. Government labs throughout the country.  For enterprise solutions or operational support, CFIA helps solve some of our nation’s most pressing cyber and digital challenges.

Case Studies:

  • CFIA was engaged by an international law firm in support of an oil-drilling services company to investigate the theft of proprietary software and client information by several former employees who left to start their own competing firm.  CFIA personnel imaged and analyzed over three hundred computers equaling over 3.1 terabytes of data, virtually all of the company’s computers, as well as those of the suspects and their collaborators.  Additionally CFIA reverse-engineered the proprietary software to identify forensic artifacts that could be found on the suspect’s computers.  The result of the exhaustive investigation was a judgment in favor of their client awarding them an initial lump sum of over $20 million and a large portion of future revenues earned by the suspects’ new firm.
  • CFIA was engaged to support a security software development company, in a lawsuit where one of their rivals sued them for intellectual property theft, and their client’s counter suit against the rival for patent infringement.  CFIA engineers successfully reverse engineered both company’s software and were able to prove that the two were uniquely different but that the adversary was using patented features.  CFIA’s efforts led to a settlement of the case, with their client receiving long term licensing royalties from its rival for use of one of its patented features.
